See below and the 2012 tab for a list of events, including a Showcase of young bands and musicians gig, A Gala Variety Concert, JJ Gilmour in concert, the ever popular annual lecture, this year presented by politician, author, journalist and broadcaster, George Galloway who will present on “Irishness in Scotland” and this year’s theatrical input, sees the return of “ The Rare Oul Times”. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. A new musical play, “Me and My Gal” based on the successful novel by local author Des Dillon and music by JJ Gilmour will also make its theatrical debut this year as well.

Another first for the festival in Coatbridge is the showing of the recently broadcast RTE documentary, A Woman of Calibre” it tells the story of the remarkable Coatbridge born feminist and revolutionary, Margaret Skinnider, who was the only female to be injured during the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin., Also returning are the two festival favourites, “An Evening with Father Ted" and “The Quiet Man Evening “. The “Quiet Man” and the festival has this year received a unique signed endorsement from none other than the film’s lead female star, Maureen O’Hara who in her 92 year is still going strong in her native Ireland.

Other ever present festival features are the Irish Quiz, Gaelic Football, A youth Soccer Tournament as well as the ever popular Family Ceili with music provided by the St Patrick’s Coatbridge Comhaltas group.

A Woman of Calibre – Margaret Skinnider

Venue: St Patrick’s Church Hall, Mayo Suite, St John St, Coatbridge, ML5 3HB. Commences 7.30pm. Tickets £2

Preceded by a talk from Máirtín Ó Catháin , lecturer in history at the University of Central Lancashire , and who appears in the programme, will discuss the political goals of many of the Scots born Irish in the early 20 th century and their desire to to attain Irish freedom and independence .

Having been contacted by RTE to source early photographs of Coatbridge in relation to Margaret Skinnider, the Irish TV company have kindly given the festival permission to show the 30 minute documentary in its entirety. It is fitting that this will occur about 150 yards from her birthplace. It’s a fascinating insight into her role during the 1916 rising, as we begin to learn even more about this remarkable woman, born into humble surrounds in Coatbridge to Monaghan and Meath born Irish parents, and who was destined to play a role in arguably one of the most significant periods in the history of Ireland.
